Flower shop in Coventry offers gift of service 365 days a year

COVENTRY, R.I. -

For 40 years, Ice House Flowers in Coventry has opened its doors on Christmas Day to sell flowers to people in a community where it’s become an icon.

Years ago, George Proffitt got a call from people in town for a funeral on Christmas.

“They were going to have calling hours on Christmas night, and would I please help them?” Proffitt said. And that was the beginning of a Christmas tradition.

“These were the days before the Wal-Marts, these were the days before the C-V-S’s that are open and sell everything as we now know.”

Proffitt, who retired from a career in Naval Intelligence before opening his flower shop in the 1970s, still opens his store each Christmas morning, after all these years.

“I come here just about every Christmas,” said Jordan Brown. He was buying a centerpiece for Christmas dinner at his sister-in-law’s house.

He says it’s been a tradition for about 15-years and a way to support a local store.

“I like keeping the money in the town,” Brown said.

Over the years, the shop has changed.
